Nova Scotia bound

From Acadiana to Acadie!

Another one of those special dresses from my mother's personal vintage collection.  This bright yellow cotton dress is vibrant with personality.  A comfy cotton dress that celebrates the 80's.  After sitting in my shop for more than one spring time now it is finally on its way home, to Canada. For some fine lady to wear with a smile.

fit for Queensland

This lovely cotton number has been a part of my mothers vintage dress collection for many decades.  I am thrilled to finally see it find a new home. In Queensland, Australia no less. I am always so excited to ship items from my special collection overseas. I know it's only stuff but I like it and to know it will begin a new journey so far away intrigues me, maybe because the cities, towns and communities themselves fascinate me.  How incredible it would be if I was the one traveling overseas and think about all the things you have experienced in your favorite summertime dress. If only clothes could talk to whisper all it has seen...

Transactions like this leave me inspired to rummage through my vintage collection, to snap some great pictures and get to uploading more to my shop to see what other new journeys may unfold.

vintage + handmade

Vintage + Handmade that's what I'm all about and this is a perfect example of mixing vintage pieces with handmade creations. In this look the cropped dolman sleeve top is sewn and hand-dyed in my studio, the necklace is made with stones I have collected that I wrapped with heavy gauge wire and hung from a great, beautiful vintage chain, the skirt is a wonderful red vintage slip with ruffle detail.  I made the dreamcatchers hanging about using vintage doilies and recycled metal circles from old crab nets used many moons ago somewhere here in bayou country. The blankets and afghans are either handmade or vintage or both.

A perfect representation of bayou bohemian.
Jewels + Metals, Leather + Stone, Cloth + Dye, Remnants + Relics.

simple + old + alive

I love everything about this photo found here via here and you can find even more beautifully simple photography here

Reminding me how much I appreciate the beauty of the simple, the old and house plants inside random found and collected containers.  Refreshing my excitement for my very own collection of age old somethings.

Twila!

portfolio sketch by Twila

When considering my first interview for Slow Southern Style I did not hesitate to interview Twila of Twila's Vintage Clothing. A great representation of southern style done right with personality, confidence, creativity and charm. A young belle with fresh, effortless style often inspired by olde days gone by. She's a fashion designer, a vintage collector, a free spirit and a Lafayette native turned brand new Brooklynite.

barely resembling what led me there

featuring the first one of its kind the DaniLove satchel
i write this post in hopes that, as I am almost certain, my niece does not actually read my blog
this is her gift i made with her, danielle love, in mind from start to finish (hints the name)

well last post i mentioned how inspiration triggers something that gets you creatin'
thats what happened with this here bag
and it really does not at all resemble what led me there
but i am excited to have made it and put one more present under the tree
while maybe just maybe inspiring another 'kinda' like it

this was my first time in a while to work with leather, the leather punch and lacing
hopefully something i will do a little more of
i enjoyed giving new life to this very old vintage dress
it could not be worn due to a nonfunctional zipper
 it hung waiting for repair
but even better than repair it changed into something completely different
and led me somewhere

put to good use

shop here

I just thought this was such a creative way to display antique or vintage pieces
while allowing them to be useful and serve a purpose
these are both available on etsy I happened upon them while clicking around
and I was drawn to post because it's such a simple idea with rustic vintage charm
my favorite!

I actually have one of those old mechanic light cases just sitting in a drawer...hmm
and just earlier today I had my eye on this small (about 12"x12") square piece of tin with a rusty patina
sitting in a pile in our backyard and I thought to myself that would make a good magnet board in my studio space the same space I have spent the last few days rearranging...
this cooler weather we have had certainly 'opens doors' for new inspiration to come blowing on in

I hope your day finds the 'doors open'

the glory of crates

found here

I am always in like of the many a uses for old crates
and the way they look doing the job
here are several more pictures of them at work

the chair is one of the most rethunk I have seen yet
mostly I am taken by those used as shelves which takes no building just placing really
with that simple rustic look I always favor
but this chair sparked my interest
it reminds me of a project my hubby and his sweet friend collaborate on
using salvaged palettes to create modern chairs, benches and tables
